Configure Automatic Updating of the Operating System

Once you are satisfied that you've done all you can to patch and configure the computer off-line, go ahead and reconnect to the network.

Windows installers will want to immediately visit Windows Update

To check your Automatic Updates settings

  1. On the taskbar at the bottom of your screen, click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Automatic Updates icon.
    The Automatic Updates dialog box opens.
  3. Windows 2000 enables Automatic Updates by default. If the check box next to Keep my computer up to date is clear, click it to select it.
    This check box must be selected for Automatic Updates to occur.
  4. Under Settings, select Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify.
  5. From the lists provided, select a day and time for your computer to check for, download, and install updates.
  6. Click OK to apply your changes and close the dialog box.

Verify Virus Signature Updates

Check the the anti-virus configuration to see that it is updating on a regular basis
